Working on my relaunch

I’ll keep this short. Reading about people falling down on the job isn’t all that interesting. But it’s a start (and more for me than anyone else).

My favorite past-times are watching IU win national championships (did that), eating ice cream from Culver’s (always doing that), taking in baseball (about to do that), and writing (gulp). I’ve gone more than 12 months without writing a word on my own website. Yes, I’ve written plenty for others, but there’s more to the void than available time. I actually have plenty of time. Being a subject matter expert is important, and much of my expertise is a mile wide and an inch deep, which doesn’t lend itself to interesting reading. So now, I’m following some personal rules of engagement:

First, write only when there’s something important to say. It won’t be important to everyone, but it will be important to someone (even if the message is: “You gotta try this restaurant.”) And not everything will be tied back to a lesson for the gang in B2B.

Second, don’t worry about thought leadership. We have plenty of thought leaders elbowing each other for position. Instead, I’ll shoot for “interesting” or “quirky.”

Third, be confident. Not everyone will agree with every written word. That’s OK. We live in a polarized world and people often disagree. It doesn’t mean we’re arch enemies. And groupthink isn’t all that healthy in a functioning society.

This will evolve. And thanks for bearing with me as I work out my thoughts real time. Practice is important when it comes to writing but, at some point, you need to let ‘er rip.
